Historical Background
An article from the Orlando Sentinel titled "Lesson for life learned well," written by longtime Orlando Sentinel columnist Dick Burdette. This article was written following the death of Michael Gladden Jr. on April 17, 1982, and focuses on the story of his longtime employee, Allen Chisholm. Mr. Chisholm started working for Michael Gladden Jr. at the age of 15, tasked with buying products in Orlando for the inventory of M. Gladden Staple and Fancy Groceries. Later in his career, he would deliver products directly to the customer for Michael Gladden Jr. Allen Chisholm saved his money and bought an old Model T Ford, stocked with produce and canned goods. In time, Allen Chisholm replaced that old Model T with a Lincoln-green 1949 Ford pickup. Later in life, Mr. Chisholm would assist Michael Gladden Jr. in operating Gladden Coin Laundry.
